GREETINGS FROM THE TROPICS
LOTS OF ANGLERS FROM CALIFORNIA WERE FISHING WITH US THIS WEEK. PESCA PANAMA"S "GO TO MAN ON THE WEST COAST," RICKY ZUNIGA WAS FISHING WITH DAVID BACCA, MANNY GORIEL, JOHN HELFRICH, JOHN DEWITT, DAVID JONES, DAVID NICKEY, DENNIS STANROD, EDWARD RUHMAN AND JACK SOLOMON. MOST OF THIS GROUP WERE RETURNING ANGLERS.
FROM SOUTH FLORIDA, FISHING GUIDES DEAN PANOS AND FRED DAVID WERE FISHING WITH PESCA PANAMA FOR THE FIRST TIME. BOTH DEAN AND FRED WANTED TO ADD BLACK MARLIN TO THEIR LIST OF BILLFISH CAUGHT. IT WAS GOING TO BE AN INTERESTING WEEK OF FISHING!
WE STARTED OFF THE CHARTER WITH THE BARGE ANCHORED IN THE LEE OF GAMAZ ISLAND. THIS HAS BECOME OUR REGULAR STARTING POINT, WEATHER PERMITTING. THE GUEST WERE ON THE FRONT DECK MUNCHING DOWN ON FRESH LOBSTER AND HAVE A FEW DRINKS WHILE THE DECK HANDS WERE MAKING LIVE BAIT OFF THE STERN. EVERYTHING WAS SO PERFECT I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN HALF SURPRISED IF JIMMY BUFFET HAD SHOWN UP.
NEXT DAY OUR BOATS HEADED OUT FISHING INTO A LONG, SIX FOOT SWELL. SCHOOLS OF TUNA WERE SOON ENCOUNTERED AROUND MONTUOSA ISLAND. LIVE BAIT WAS PRODUCING HITS BUT THE POPPERS WERE THE PREFERRED OFFERING OF THE DAY. THE YELLOWFINS CAME CRASHING DOWN ON THE POPPERS. WE LOST THE EXACT COUNT DURING THE ACTION BUT ENDED UP WITH OVER 35 YELLOWFIN TUNA FOR THE DAY. MOST WERE IN THE 80 TO 120 LB CLASS.
DEAN AND FRED RAN TO HANNIBAL BANK CAUGHT SOME LIVELY BONITA AND QUICKLY BRIDLED CIRCLE HOOKS TO THE BAITS' NOSE. IN A SHORT TIME DEAN'S BAIT GOT A MARLIN HIT. JUST LIKE IN THE BOOK HE LET THE LINE FEED OUT WHILE THE MARLIN GOT THE BIG BAIT IN ITS' MOUTH AND THEN HE CAME LIGHT ON THE LINE FOR THE PERFECT HOOK-UP. DEAN WAS IN HIS STAND-UP FIGHTING HARNESS AND READY FOR THIS FISH. HE CLIPPED THE REEL TO HIS HARNESS AND THE SHORT LASTING FIGHT WAS ON. IN 15 MINUTES DEAN HAD THE ESTIMATED 350 - 400 LB BLACK MARLIN BY THE SIDE OF THE BOAT AND WAS READY TO MAKE A LIVE RELEASE. CONGRATULATIONS DEAN ON YOUR FIRST BLACK MARLIN! OH, I FOR GOT TO TELL YOU DEAN AND FRED HAD ALREADY BOATED 11 YELLOWFIN TUNA. THE NEXT DAY THEY ADDED ANOTHER 13 YELLOWFIN TO THEIR CATCH. THESE GUYS WERE INTO THE FISH!
TUESDAY, WAS A DAY TO REMEMBER! GOOD FISHING WAS TO BE HAD IN ALL LOCATIONS. CAPTAIN TOMMY AND HIS ANGLERS HEADED TO ISLA JICARON WHERE THEY LANDED 6 CUBERA SNAPPERS ALONG WITH A LONG LIST OF OTHER INSHORE SPECIES. CAPTAINS TITO, JUAN AND TATIN FISHED THE LEE SHORE OF COIBA ISLAND WHERE THEY FOUND GOOD INSHORE ACTION AROUND BAHIA DAMAS. THE ANGLERS LANDED 11 ROOSTERFISH UP TO 60 LBS ALONG WITH OTHER MANY OTHER INSHORE SPECIES. ANGLER DENNIS STANROD SAID, "IT WAS THE BEST DAY OF FISHING HE HAD EVER HAD IN HIS 52 YEARS. DAVID BACCA DECIDED TO MESS AROUND WITH A LIGHT SPINNING OUTFIT THAT HE HAD BROUGHT, SPOOLED UP WITH 17LB TEST MONO. DAVID STARTED CASTING A YO-ZURI ARC MINNOW TOWARDS SHORE. ABOUT THE FORTH CAST AND DAVID WAS OFF TO THE RODEO WITH A SIZEABLE ROOSTER. THE FIGHT WAS ON! THE POOR ROD WAS BENT OVER LIKE A NOODLE BUT HUNG IN THERE. ABOUT THIRTY MINUTES LATER WE BOATED 35 – 40LB. ROOSTER. DAVID ALSO MANAGED TO BAG A DECENT REEF DONKEY, ALONG WITH A NICE BLUE TREVALLY, NICE JOB DAVID!
“CAPTAIN LUCHO HEADED BACK TO HANNIBAL BANK WITH DEAN AND FRED FOR ANOTHER SHOT AT BLACK MARLIN. THEY WENT 2 FOR 4 WITH BOTH ANGLERS CATCHING AND RELEASING BLACK MARLIN IN THE 500 LB RANGE. IT WAS INDEED A GREAT DAY OF FISHING! NEXT DAY DEAN AND FRED REPEATED THE DAY BEFORE WITH BOTH RELEASING BLACK MARLIN IN THE 500 LB RANGE AND THEN LANDED A 260 LB YELLOWFIN TUNA. BABY, WHEN YOU ARE HOT, YOU'RE HOT!
DAVID & RICKY HEADED OFF TO MONTUOSA AND TRIED TO HELP THIN OUT THE YELLOWFIN. 10 TUNA LATER IN THE 80 – 110LB CLASS, THEY DECIDED TO CALL IT QUITS. IT JUST DOSEN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!
TIGHT LINES,
CAPTAIN JAY GUSTIN
