"Hi Jan
Salmon Abundance
Prior to the season you may recall that I had written about there being 25% more Chinook this year. We are 15 days into the season and I would say this has been the best early season fishing we have had in Kyuquot. They are predominantly three year old fish, with a twenty pound average, but it has been very consistent for numbers, with a few thirty pounders mixed in the bag.
We are still seeing the big numbers of US bound clipped hatchery fish. The capture rate for clipped fish is about 60% right now, which is the highest that I seen for this time of year.
The ocean is very happy right now, and the abundance of bait fish, birds, whales and other mammals is very high. With this much food in the ocean, abundance of three year olds...its tells us alot about next years potential four year old Columbia River return...
Bigger fish are just starting to show here in Kyuquot and I expect the rest of the month of July and August to be dynamite.
Our home town of Port Alberni is in the middle of great return of Sockeye to the Stamp River. The run size predictions have been re adjusted because of the visible abundance of fish on the grounds and as such has been revised to over 850,000! The fish returning through the rivers are counted daily and over 240,000 sockeye are safely behind the fishermen and into the rivers so far."
